Hey Kids! I saw a shooting star last night. Does anyone remember the scientific name for a shooting star?

Unknown said...

Hi mr wright,
aurora borealis?

Mr. Wright said...

Aurora borealis is the scientific name for the Northern Lights.

I'll give you a hint. Another name for a shooting star is...
A. astroid B. meteor C. meteorite

Unknown said...

Hey hey hey!

It's just your fellow friend, Emily! Is it a meteor?

Mr. Wright said...

DING DING DING!!! Your right Emily. Abbey and I played a fun game last night with her cousins that involves Centrifugal Force.

I think it was called ladder toss. You play by tossing two golf balls that are connected by a short string at three bars. If your aim is good, the golf balls will wrap around the ladder poles and your team will get either 1, 2, or 3 points depending on which ladder pole it wrapped around. I'll try to find video of it on youtube. It would be a fun and easy game to make! Have fun and let everyone else know about this blog site.

Unknown said...

Emily I see you stayed in contact
with Mr. Wright.

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Reece! How is your summer going? Abbey and I just biked to a tennis court and played tennis for about 2 hours. I had forgotten how much fun it is to ride a bike.
My brother an I are going to race our sailboat tonight at 6:30 PM. If anyone wants to see a lot of sailboats, bring some binoculars to High cliff state park. We have a small 21.5 ft white hunter sailboat.

taylor dougie said...

Hi its me Taylor i just got back from camp last week.
mr. wright i know that game with the two golf balls, but i think the real game of golf is better.
i hope you guys are having a fun summer

taylor dougie said...

by the way reece my mom said she saw you at the firecracker 5K on the fourth of july i got 30:10 for that race

Unknown said...

I was there at the 5k run.

taylor dougie said...

emily reece i was reading all the comments and i wanted to ask, have you guys ever seen a shooting star,i havnt,i know mr.wright has.

Unknown said...

Last night I saw 4 shooting stars!

taylor dougie said...

i am not lucky i have never seen a shooting star.my dad saw two one night when i wasnt looking

Mr. Wright said...

Don’t give up Taylor! Seeing a shooting star simply takes time and patients.
Meteor showers happen during times of the year when the Earth is passing through areas in space that have a lot of asteroids floating around. Sometimes a meteor shower can be caused by collisions in the asteroid belt located between Mars and Saturn. Sometimes a comet or another asteroid bumps other asteroids and sends them on a collision course with Earth. I’ll try to find a website that gives you a calendar of the expected meteor showers this year. We had a good one start last week but I think we’re getting to the end of it.

Thank you for all your emails and for responding to each other in this blog. It has been really neat to hear from everyone and to see you’re all still excited about learning. By the way, this blog would be a good place to let each other know what teacher you have for next year!

Keep discovering!

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

Chloe and I have Mr.Krznarich as a teacher

Mr. Wright said...

Thats Great for you and Chloe Taylor! Mr. K is a lot of fun and he likes to play tennis! I remember last year he got a little puppie and brought it to one of our teacher meetings. If you two work as hard in Mr. K's Class as you did in ours you'll have a wonderful 5th grade year.

Unknown said...

Mr. wright I know 5 people in my class and Parker is one of them.

Mr. Wright said...

Thats Great Reece, tell Parker I say hi! Make sure you let others know about this blog site so you guys can communicate with each other. Abbey and I had a great summer. We just got back from sailing. My brother and I jumped off the boat and abbey threw us ropes so we could drag in the water. It was a lot of fun but our arms got so tired we could barely pull ourselves in! I'm so proud of all of you and I wish everyone an awesome first day of school tomorrow.

Unknown said...

Mr.Wright did you know that the book hatchet got me interested in reading, couse know when I read a book its like a movie in my head I forget that I am even reading.

p.s. i never saw a shooting star

p.p.s.s.i hade mrs.nelson last year!!

Mr. Wright said...

Hello everyone! Reece and Muranda, It's so good to hear from you. I'm so glad that you are having so much fun reading Reece! I think about everyone in Kaukauna often and miss you all very much. Its great that you have Mr. K Muranda! He is a really great teacher and you are lucky to have him. I'm sorry It took so long to respond to your comments. Now that people are begining to respond again, I'll try to keep a closer eye on our blog. I'll leave you with a thought- Why do the leaves change on some trees in the fall?

taylor dougie said...

mr wright i still have my elf ears hat,and i still wear it all the time.
Muranda would know :)

taylor dougie said...

Mr. Wright - some leaves on trees change color in fall because there is less sunlight in the fall so there isn't enough light for photosynthis to occur.

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Taylor! Your right about the leaves. Every time Abbey and I see hats with elf ears we think of you. How is your 5th grade going? What are you learning in science? Is everyone getting along ok in middle school? Tell everyone I miss them.

taylor dougie said...

we just took our test on plant and animal cells.I dont know what were going to learn about after thanksgiving.

taylor dougie said...

yes emily that is random

Unknown said...

Mr.wright I have been bored Mrs.Smarzinski makes me do a book report every MOUNTH!!!!!!!

taylor dougie said...

were doing a science project on energy sources.my partner is muranda and were doing hydro-electric power.

Mr. Wright said...

Hey gang! I'm sorry I haven't checked our blog in a long time. I was so excited to see you are still using it!

Emily, What is all the bad luck about? I'm sure what ever it is you are going to get through it ok. Sometimes it just helps to let others know you're having a bad day. I hope everyone is still helping each other out and staying positive. There's nothing better then friends you can trust.

Hey Reece, book reports getting you down? Remember, it's all a matter of perspective. You need to find a way to make your book reports come alive and show your creative side. Ever use movie editing software like imovie? If you have access to a video camera and a computer, you could try reenacting some scenes from your books as part of your book report. You'd have to run it by Mrs. S. first though. Good luck, I know you'll find a way to personalize it.

Taylor,

Finally putting the stuff we learned in our electricity unit to work aye! Did you tour the kaukauna electric companie's hydro-electric plant to get information? I would like to here about what you two came up with. I heard of a new way to generate environmentally friendly renewable power the other day. It's called Tidal Power! Yup, engineers plan to use the tide going in and out twice a day to turn electricity generating turbines. I'll try to post a picture for you.

Have fun everyone and keep checking in from time to time.

Maybe I'll see you at the Sole Burner.

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

Mr Wright,

Im going to the soal burner.wedidnt go to the plant.i heard about a new energy source there trying to figure out.its got something to do with plasma and lightning balls and how thats what the sun is made out of and when it explodes we can use it to stay alive.

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Taylor,

I think you might be talking about nuclear fusion. The sun uses nuclear fusion to create enormous amounts of energy by basically fusing two hydrogen atoms to make one helium atom. The explosions fly outward but the strong gravitational pull keeps most of it from flying apart into space. The sun is stuck in a tug of war between blowing itself up and crushing itself inward. We've been able to recreate a fusion reaction here on earth but it usually takes more energy to do it then we get out of it and only last a fraction of a second. I've heard of experiments using electro magnetic fields to contain the fusion reactions. I also think lasers have been looked at as possible tools for containing the energy. E = mc2 tells us that there is enough energy to power an entire city in just a cup of water! This really could solve much of our energy problems.

I'll try to find a video on it.

Have a great weekend!

taylor dougie said...

really i also heard they have this plant calle dthe iter where they do nuclear fision and i remember something about it gives off 10 times the energy that is put in.I also heard its shaped like a donut :)

taylor dougie said...

i mean fusion

taylor dougie said...

hi

taylor dougie said...

i got 26:25 at the sole burner i did better than at the run for home when i got 27:27

Mr. Wright said...

Hey that's great Taylor! Abbey and I finished in around 31 minutes. I haven't looked it up yet. It was so great to see you girls again. I wish we had more time to talk about your year and everything that is going on in your lives. I'm very proud of you all! Let everyone know that I haven't forgot about the 4th grade video I promised. I had to redo the whole thing because the hard drive broke down in my computer. Keep writing in with your experiences!

taylor dougie said...

I was just about to ask you about that.Chloe keeps trying to talk to mrs koel about it. when i told her about the sole burner she got all mad because she was down there and she could have seen you. at the sole burner i could have gotten third for my age group but the girl beat me by 17 seconds.i wanted to run with mrs.koel because she usually finishes before me but when the race was about to start i couldnt find her anywhere.

taylor dougie said...

yay i just found out there times were wrong so i got 24 or 25 minutes

Unknown said...

hey every one. i am really sorry i haven't been in touch. i cannot wait until summer. 1: no school 2: no homework 3: no teachers 3: the warm weather =]

in the soul burner i got 27 49 i was really bummed that the clock was broken. good thing i had my watch on tho! that was my best time so far... so i thought i did pretty good, considering that i ran alone too.
Mr. Wright it was really good to see you again. it seems like for ever since i have.

my favorite part is when he was all like "no, dont touch this, it is a no touching zone" me and lauren were laughing so loud. o and then when octavious was running thru the grass and it showed him yelling and running and then the quietness. lol. and the king guy with the lisp. i like the red blow up dog who was just randomly bouncing everywhere and the part where the blonde hero guy was trying to say sacagawea's name. my favorite person was probably...hhmmmmm... probably the blonde guy who was famous for leading 208 ppl to their deaths... no wonder why, he had such stupid plans for battle.

taylor dougie said...

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Kids, I'm sorry I haven't written in a long while. Abbey and I have been very busy with family events, Masters classes, and vacations. I can't believe you are all in 6th grade now! I am so proud of all of you! I would love to hear what you are all doing now. What are you learning? Are you having a good year? So, if anyone is still checking this blog, please let me know and I'll start adding new things again.

Later Gators,

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

i still check this blog i get emailed when someone posts something i have mr wirth as a teacher hes awesome and really funny. and guess what recently i saw quite a few shooting stars :) im so happy!and in science were learning about space i guess and i just went to a cross country meet and got 24th place and it was an invite so there were like 85 ppl

taylor dougie said...

hey my name changed from taylor to mo :)

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Taylor!

I was wondering who this "Mo" character was! Thats great to hear about your cross country meet. How far do you usually run in your meets. Is it always a 5K or are their different course lengths?

What are you learning about in your space science courses. I could try to get some videos on our blog site about it.

I'm glade you are having such a good time your 6th grade year. Thanks for keeping me up to date with your accomplishments.

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

well the cross country meets are usually 1 and a quarter mile but the one i just went to was a big one with the high schoolers it was 2 miles

in science were learning about the sun and sunspots ,blackholes, auroras, the big bang theory, and a couple different things i cant think of,and those are just some of the vocabulary words

taylor dougie said...

oh and i can tell emily to look at the site too she keeps forgetting how to get to the website

Mr. Wright said...

Wow, 2 miles! Are you telling me that you competed against high school aged athletes and you still took 24th out of 85! What was your 2 mile time?

I put some new videos on the blog about the possibility of making an elevator into space. It sounds crazy but it seems theoretically possible.

Let me know if you would like me to post anything specific.

Have a great week!

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

thanks i got fifteen minutes exact but no i wasnt against the high schoolers there were 6 different races middle school jv and then varsity

Unknown said...

I wonder if any poeple be sides emily and taylor and me.

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Reece, I was just wondering if you still looked at the blog. It's great to hear from you!

So, you folks like our classroom goldfish? Anyone learn how to feed them?

I hope you all have a great week.

taylor dougie said...

classroom goldfish?

Mr. Wright said...

Happy Holidays 6th graders! I hope that everyone is taking time to help others this holiday season. Stay safe and enjoy your break.

If anyone has any ice fishing or snow stories, Abbey and I would love to hear them!

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

I don't have any snow stories really. All I have is that ummmm...... well I can't really think of any stories right now, but Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year :)

Unknown said...

It sucks i have to move to Kentucky.
Kentucky! serisly 2 states away it ticks me off.

taylor dougie said...

black holes suck

Mr. Wright said...

Hey Reece,

I'm sorry your feeling bad about moving to kentucky. When is this going to happen? You are a great person and I know you'll have no problem meeting new people and making friends. I know that sounds trivial at a time like this but I thought I would say it anyway. You always were very kind and understanding and I'm sure your parents are going to need that kindness and understanding during this difficult move. Your friends will remain your friends no matter the distance. Always remember Reece, Home is where you make it.

Taylor, nice joke about the black holes! You always did have a way of cheering people up. I hope your having a wonderful year!

taylor dougie said...

Im having a good year I think im pretty sure. How about you?

Unknown said...

I'm moving on march 6th right in the school year but when i get there i get to miss 1 week of school so it's not all bad.Mr.Wright do you still sail your bout on Thursdays?

taylor dougie said...

Today is March 3rd

Mr. Wright said...

Hello everyone. I just saw tornado warnings in the Kaukauna area. I hope everyone is somewhere safe. Let me know how everything is going in 6th grade.
Reece if you are still reading this, I hope you are making a lot of new friends in kentucky.

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...

6th grade is 6th grade like hahahaha

Unknown said...

I hate kentucky is always hot or raining and every body is hostile to me. :[

Mr. Wright said...

Sorry to here your having trouble Reece. I hope it's much better now that you have started school. Remember to stay positive and give the kids a chance to get to know you. Speeking of the new school year, I had better change this to a 7th grade blog! Taylor, I hope you are having a good begining to your school year as well. It's nice to here how everyone is doing so keep writing in from time to time. Abbey and I are going to have our first child sometime around February 22nd. We get to find out if it is a boy or a girl in about two weeks! Hope to here from our class soon,

Mr. Wright

taylor dougie said...
